Frequently problems with substance abuse and addiction are related to underlying problems that are not always recognizable. In this way, substance abuse frequently can be a symptom of anxiety, depression, or some other related issue. In many cases people are unaware of the underlying problems entirely. Usually it is the case is that the substance abuse exists in order to relieve difficult and often confusing emotional states. For an individual who is in the throes of addiction, untangling the complex relationships between the substance abuse, difficult emotional states, and underlying precipitating problems can prove to be a difficult task. A process of discovery reveals the links that create and sustain these difficult entanglements. It is when the problems are clearly identifiable that they can be addressed and lasting change towards a happy and healthful future can be created.
