Frequently problems with substance abuse and addiction are related to underlying problems that are not always recognizable. In this way, substance abuse frequently can be a symptom of anxiety, depression, or some other related issue. In many cases people are unaware of the underlying problems entirely.  Usually it is the case is that the substance abuse exists in order to relieve difficult and often confusing emotional states.
