It can be a difficult decision to enter therapy. The fact that you are considering treatment means you are ready for some change. Your willingness to examine yourself and identify that you want changes in your life is the first step towards a happier lifestyle. A key component to treatment is working with someone with whom you feel connected. Treatment is most effective when you feel safe enough with a therapist to risk becoming vulnerable.
Your therapy can be short-term or long-term. Short-term therapy focuses on problem solving, behavioral issues, current stressors, building coping skills for depression or anxiety, or parenting issues. Long-term treatment may focus on changing life long patterns, understanding yourself and your way of being in the world, addressing underlying causes of recurrent depression or anxiety, changing your attachment style with your child, or understanding how past trauma has impacted your current life.
Over your first few sessions with me I will conduct a thorough assessment to help determine the type of treatment I recommend for you. Your initial assessment may span 1 to 4 sessions depending on how much information you are willing or able to provide. I will ask questions about current and past symptoms and experiences to gain an understanding of your needs. I then make recommendations for treatment, including whether I feel I am the right therapist for you, and/or which types of treatment in which you would benefit. Recommendations may include individual short or long term treatment, family treatment, or dyadic parent-child treatment.
I have experience with children, adolescents, adults, and older adult populations. I have provided therapy to children ages 0-5 with their parents focusing on attachment, children of elementary school age through high school ages, and adults in out-patient practices and clinics. I have also been fortunate enough to work with older adults and Hospice patients, both in homes and in my office. I have a great appreciation for all stages of life and will help you find meaning in whichever stage of change you are in.
